Workshops
Holly and the other section leaders are happy to offer workshops to fit any occasion, from a primary school music lesson to a corporate teambuilding weekend.
Introduction to Maracatu – Holly Prest
- Explanation of the baques (patterns) for alfaias, along with bell, shekere, and snare patterns.
- Introductory phrasing and building a Maracatu ensemble
- A brief but detailed presentation (with notes) about the background and cultural setting of Maracatu
- Individual feedback about technique
- Opportunity to play traditional instruments as well as try out something new
2-5 hours allows for extra technique exercises, traditional songs, more complex arrangement(s), and solo phrasing.
Suitable for 10 – 30 participants
Introduction to North-eastern Brazilian grooves – Holly Prest
- Throughout the workshop, a detailed presentation about the various styles of NE Brazilian music and dance; Maracatu Nação, Côco, Caboclinho, Ijexá, Maracatu Rural, Samba Reggae, and more
- Individual feedback about technique
- Ensemble drumming
- Solo phrasing for snare, repique, and alfaia, depending on level of playing experience.
It is also possible to cater for all instruments within this workshop (ie tamborim, bell, ganza, surdo, and more) - Opportunity to play traditional instruments and as well as try out something new
- An accompanying 20-track CD of authentic NE Brazilian music
- Post-workshop notation, if required
One-to-one tuition – Holly Prest
- Tailored instrument lesson based on level of playing experience/area of interest
- Building an ensemble piece (ideal for aspiring band leaders)
- Detailed presentation/notes/background information related to lesson content
- Individual feedback about technique
- Solo technique and phrasing
- Tips and tricks of the trade!
- Opportunity to play traditional instruments and/or try out something new
2-5 hours allows for extra technique exercises, traditional songs, more complex arrangement(s) and solo phrasing.
Suitable for solo players or small group study.

Fees
Workshop fees will vary depending on:
- Length of session
- Workshop requested
- Location (travel expenses are charged on top of workshop fee)
- Request for extra members of JDL to attend the workshop
- Opportunity for a Post-workshop performance (to be organised by hosting band)
